Since day one of my journey through Central America, hummingbirds have become an obsession. I can’t explain their allure. I only know that when I watch them hover I stand silent; hypnotised.
Although as a novice birder, using my images to identify which ones I’ve watched is no easy task. Like tiny oil slicks, their iridescence flickers with them. The slightest change in light and a millisecond in time can completely change their appearance.
As I strived to get the perfect shot of these perfect creatures, I wondered whether using my camera was detracting from the magic of simply observing. Then I accidentally captured this shot of two birds at once. It’s horribly over-exposed, not completely focused on its subjects and in black and white, gives no idea of exactly which species is behind my lens.
However faceless this image may be, it shows what I love about hummingbirds: their delicate grace, their fleeting nature and their drive to survive.
Beautiful birds!
